Painting with watercolors is so enjoyable and relaxing. However, there are times when you feel like you’re trying too hard or the painting isn’t working out right. This usually has to do with the water-to-paint ratio, so how much water to use in watercolor painting?

The amount of water to use on watercolor painting depends on what kind of brush or paper you’re using and how light or dark you want the watercolor paint to be. The best way to learn how much water to use is by experimenting with different amounts of water on a practice sheet of paper.

Has this made it more clear? Follow the article to find out more about how much water to use in watercolor painting, how you dilute watercolor paint, and the different techniques you can try!

How do you dilute watercolor paint?

There are three ways to use water in your watercolor painting: a brush, the mixing palette, or wettened paper. This will make it much easier to understand the water-to-paint ratio.

It all depends on the look you’re going for! I strongly recommend trying out multiple techniques to see the differences.

Here are my tips for diluting your watercolors:

Use as little water as possible. Use just enough to get the desired effect, but not so much that it makes the paint too runny and difficult to control. The thing is, you can always add more, but it’s harder to remove excess water.

Add more color than water first. This will create a more vibrant color in your painting, which is desirable for many projects. If you’d like some shading or a lighter color, add more water. Yes – a lot of trial and error here!

Paint over an already painted area with diluted paint rather than applying directly from the tube or pan onto a new surface. This creates a nice even coverage of color on your paper or canvas when you layer colors together.

You can use a brush or a paper towel to wipe off excess paint on an area of the paper. Alternatively, dip your brush into clean water and then back into the color you want to dilute. This way, you don’t waste any of your precious pigment.

How much water to use in watercolor painting?

If you don’t know how much water to use, it can be frustrating. When using watercolors, it’s important to know how much water to use in order to achieve the desired effect.

If the paint is too wet, then it will be difficult for you to control the color on your paper or canvas. If it’s too dry, then you won’t be able to get any color from your brush at all!

Plus, every painting is different!

If your painting has too much water in it, it will run and fade. If there’s not enough water, your paint won’t transfer from the brush to the paper.

To get started with watercolor painting, you’ll need to learn how to mix your paints and control the amount of water in your paint mixture.

When painting with watercolors it’s essential to use the right amount of water. I know you might be thinking, but there are too many watercolor options.

How much water should I use? Should I just take my chances?” The answer is no, it’s not worth taking the chance to create drippy artwork.

The best advice I can give is don’t add too much water at once – start with just a few drops and stir them until they’re completely mixed into the paint before adding more if needed.

Begin with your paints about as thick as milk and add water until they reach a consistency that works for you.

Not enough water

If there isn’t enough water in your paint mixture, your colors will not blend well together and they may appear blotchy or uneven on your paper or canvas surface.

Too much water

Having too much water in your mixture can cause the colors to run together instead of creating beautiful blends of color as they should!

The right amount of water

Ultimately, you want the mix to be watery, but to still have more paint. The brush is wet but not dripping. And the result should be a smooth stroke that shouldn’t dry out right away.

What affects the water-to-paint ratio for watercolor?

How much water to use depends mainly on three factors: the surface of the paper, the paint, and your brush.

The most important factor is the type of paper you are using. Watercolor papers are made with different thicknesses, textures, and surfaces.

Different papers have different amounts of absorbency, so this also affects how much water you need to use. You may have to experiment with different papers to find one that works for your style of painting.

Then there’s the watercolor paint. Different paints have different ingredients, which impacts how much water they need.

But there is also a difference between pan and tube paints. The dry pan paints require much more water to be activated, the tubes are however already wet, so they require less.

Lastly, I must not forget to mention brushes. Here it’s all about the type of bristles – real animal hair absorbs way more than artificial ones.

And size matters too! Smaller brushes hold less water than bigger brushes.

Clean water

This is the most important part in my opinion! You have to always have clean water at hand.

If you’re just reusing the water, you’re risking dirty and dull colors and nobody wants that…

Use two cups of water instead! Try one cup for washing and mixing warm colors like reds and yellows and one for cool colors like blues and greens.

Or, what I do – one cup is for picking up clean water to mix in the palette and the second cup is to wash the brushes. Easy!

FAQ

Do you add water to watercolor paint?

Yes, water is the most important ingredient in watercolors and you can’t really paint a nice watercolor painting without it as the paints are very dry, especially the ones in the pans! Without enough water in your paint mixture, you will be unable to create a smooth layer of color over any surface.

How do you put water in watercolor?

You can add water directly to the pans, or you can mix it with watercolors on the mixing palette. You want to use the right amount of water. Too much water and your colors won’t be as vibrant. Too little and they won’t flow smoothly on the paper.

Final thoughts

There are many ways to apply watercolor, and the amount of water you use will affect the look of your painting.

Sometimes too much water can cause your paintings to look washed out, so don’t be afraid to experiment with different amounts of water in your paintings before committing.

I’ve seen and read a lot of conflicting information over the years. This is my attempt to answer this question. If you’re an artist who uses watercolor, this will help you decide whether or not you need to use a primer before applying your paint. Can you use watercolor on canvas without gesso?

Yes, you can use watercolor on canvas without gesso. However, the result will be disappointing. The drawback of using watercolor on a canvas without gesso is that the paint will not be absorbed as well as it would on canvas that has been prepared with gesso. This means that you have to be careful when applying your first layer of paint!

While I hope this short explanation gave you an insight into using watercolors on canvas, do keep reading to have a better understanding of the topic. I’m going to talk about priming the canvas, different watercolor canvases, and more!

Watercolor paintings are among the most popular of all art forms. Artists love the freedom and spontaneity of this medium, while collectors enjoy the bright colors and unique textures that watercolors create.

But can you use watercolor on canvas without gesso?

Well, watercolors need more support from the material – something to absorb the water and hold it. Canvas is more liquid resistant and it won’t hold the watercolors.

If you want to create your own watercolor painting on a canvas, you’ll need to know how to prime the canvas for watercolor before you start.

If you haven’t done any painting on canvas before, you may wonder if it’s necessary to prime your canvas for watercolor.

The answer is yes! You cannot simply paint directly onto a bare canvas because it will bleed as you add even a small amount of moisture to the surface.

This is why I recommend priming the regular canvas with gesso – and I’m very passionate about it!

The best canvas for watercolor

The best watercolor canvas is the one that works best with your style and artistic vision. What is the best canvas for watercolor?

Watercolor canvas is the ultimate choice for artists who want to create the look and feel of a watercolor painting.

Watercolor canvas is a cotton fabric that has been coated with a layer of gesso and stretched over a wooden frame. This allows it to absorb the paint, resulting in a unique effect that you can only get from painting on this type of canvas.

If you’re just starting out, you can use any type of paper or cotton fabric as a canvas; however, if you plan on doing a lot of watercolor painting, it’s worth investing in some high-quality materials.

Canvas board is a type of paper made from wood pulp and cotton linters that are glued together before being pressed with heat and pressure. Canvas boards can be found in a variety of thicknesses.

The thicker the board is, the better it will hold up against warping over time – but it won’t feel as soft under your brushstrokes as a thinner piece would be.

Final thoughts

So, can you use watercolor on canvas without gesso? Gesso is a special paint made specifically for priming canvases and in my opinion, it should be used when painting with watercolors.

The purpose of gesso is to provide a surface that will accept wet media (like watercolor) but not bleed through or warp the canvas.

Watercolor paint is a chemical mixture of pigment, water, and binder that is used to create artwork.

The water in the mixture acts as a solvent, dissolving the binder and allowing the pigment to be absorbed by the paper or other support medium.

As a result, when you paint with watercolor, you can see how your painting will turn out before it dries because it takes time for the water to evaporate.

And let me now answer your question – how long does watercolor take to dry on paper?

The exact amount of time needed for drying will depend on the thickness of your paint layers and how much water you’re using.

The amount of water applied during application will determine how long it takes for watercolor to dry.

If you use too much water, the paint can take up to an hour to dry, and even then, you may have some puddles left on your painting!

If you use too little water, it will take a minute to dry, but you will not really be able to blend the colors on your paper very well, and isn’t that the beauty of watercolor?

The type of paper that you use also affects how long it takes for watercolors to dry.

Some papers allow the paint to soak into its fibers more than others do, which means that those paints will stay wet longer than others on those papers would.

In general, however, most watercolor paints should dry within 24 hours if they are properly applied with sufficient amounts of water and allowed time to dry between applications of color.

Generally speaking, for a smooth finish, it’ll take about 30 minutes for the first coat to dry. For a textured finish, it’ll take about an hour.

Do you have to wait for the watercolor to dry?

I often get asked, “do you have to wait for the watercolor to dry”?

And the answer is, “No!” Well, only sometimes at least.

The main reason why people think they need to wait is that they’re afraid that their paintings will be ruined if they don’t. But in reality, you can paint over watercolor with no problems at all!

The only time I would recommend waiting is if you’re using a paper that’s prone to bleeding (like 140 lb cold press). In that case, it’s best to wait until your first layer of paint dries before adding more.

But if you’re using good-quality paper, then you don’t need to worry about it.

The best way to learn patience is through practice. As you continue painting, you’ll discover that waiting for the paint to dry isn’t always necessary.

If you’re working on a large piece of paper, it’s important to let your work dry thoroughly before moving on to another area of the painting.

This will prevent unwanted bleeding between wet sections of paint or onto dry areas where there shouldn’t be any pigment at all.

However, if you’re working on a small piece of paper, such as a greeting card, try applying just enough water so that the paint flows easily from your brush onto the surface without pooling up or dripping down into other areas of your work.

I must add here that if you’re doing a layered painting and if you want to add watercolor on top of a layer without ruining it, yes, wait for it to properly dry! In watercolor, it’s all about how you want the finished product to look.

If you do that – how long for watercolor to dry? I discuss this in the next section.

How long to wait between 2 layers?

The best rule of thumb is to wait until the first layer of watercolor is completely dry which will take anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes, depending on how much water you used.

The reason why you need to wait until the first layer is completely dry is that if there is any moisture left behind, it could seep into your next layer and ruin its color, meaning you will end up with a color you didn’t want.

It’s very important to make sure that after each layer of color has dried completely, you wipe off any excess wash from your brush onto an absorbent cloth or paper towel before going on to the next layer.

This will keep the colors from mixing together when they’re wet (which would make them muddy) and also keep your brush clean so there’s less chance for it to make marks on your painting instead of where you want them!

How do you know if the watercolor is dry?

Because watercolor paint is made from water, it’s important to know when your work is dry before you move on to a new piece or start another color. And how do you know if the watercolor is dry?

If you want to know how to tell if a watercolor painting is dry, there are some simple tests that you can use.

First, look at the surface of your painting. If it looks shiny, it’s still wet and needs more time to dry.

If it looks matte and dull, then it’s probably dry and you can proceed with other steps in your painting process.

Next, touch the surface of your painting with your finger or a paper towel to see if there’s any moisture left on it. You’ll feel tackiness if there’s still moisture in the paint layers under the surface.

The final test is called the “squeeze test” where you take a paper towel or tissue and try to rub off some of the wet areas on top of your watercolor painting.

If they smear or come off onto your paper towel, then it hasn’t dried yet.

How do you dry watercolor paint?

OK, I’ve talked about how long for watercolor to dry, but I know you’re probably on your next question – how do you dry watercolor paint?

It’s important to dry your watercolors thoroughly since once the paint is dry, it’s permanent. If you leave your painting wet, it can be damaged by dust or dirt.

To dry watercolor paints, the method I use is quite simple.

Air drying. You saw it coming, huh?

This is the most common method of drying watercolor paintings. It could take up to 24 hours to fully dry and is the best option if you’re unable to store your painting in a safe place or away from dust or dirt.

You can speed up the drying process by placing a fan near your painting and turning it on low for about 15 minutes.

How do you dry watercolor quickly?

Watercolor is a medium that, once dry, can be easily smudged and rubbed off. Sometimes this is exactly what you want. But sometimes you need to dry it in a few minutes.

How do you dry watercolor quickly? Here are some tips for drying watercolor quickly.

Use a paper towel to blot the wet paint. This will get rid of much of the water, but not all of it.

Put the painting in a warm place (like an oven) with a fan blowing on it for 30 minutes or so. This should get most of the water out of your painting and make it easier to handle without smudging.

Put your painting outside on a warm day (but not in direct sunlight). This will help it dry faster as well!

Can you use a hairdryer to dry watercolor?

People ask me “can you use a hairdryer to dry watercolor” all the time! And the answer?

Yes! It’s an easy, no-fuss way to dry your work.

If you are looking for the fastest way to dry your work, then using a hair dryer is one of the best options for you.

The heat from the hair dryer will quickly evaporate all of the water from your painting and leave it completely dry.

The only thing that you need to be careful about is that you don’t use too much heat.

The reason for this is that if you use too much heat then it can damage your paper or canvas. As long as you use a medium setting on your hairdryer then there shouldn’t be any problem with damaging your artwork.

Final thoughts

The drying time of watercolor depends on the type of paper you’re using and how much water you’re using with your paints.

In general, it takes about 30 minutes for a thin wash to dry completely.

I’ve seen the question asked many times, can you use watercolor on regular paper, and I have seen the confusion in the replies. Watercolor is a great medium to work with. And there are many benefits to doing so, but can you use watercolor on regular paper?

Yes, you can. But it will not be as easy as using watercolor paper. The reason is that adding water to the paint will cause it to spread out and bleed through the paper. This makes it harder for you to control the color and makes it harder for you to get nice smooth lines.

This brief answer was only an introduction to the topic, do keep reading the rest of the article as I answer the question in more detail. I also discuss the best practices when it comes to watercolor paper, so you get the best result!

Can you use watercolor on regular paper or not?

What is the main concern when I get asked “can you use watercolor on regular paper?”

Well, lightweight papers, such as regular paper and printer paper, don’t hold up well when they get wet and can buckle or tear easily.

Heavyweight papers are more expensive but thicker and stronger; they are best for large paintings that need to be framed.

Now, if you want to use your watercolors on regular paper, there are a few things that you can do.

Use lighter colors and fewer of them. You don’t need as much pigment to get a good color when using regular paper. So go light with your strokes instead of heavy with them!

Use more paint than usual so that it doesn’t blend together as much when wet. This means that your brush strokes need to be fairly straight so they don’t mix together too much on their way down the page.

If they do mix together too much, then just use more paint in each stroke. But I still recommend using watercolor paper for the best results.

This type of paper is made specifically for watercolor, and it will have a nice tooth (texture) to it that will hold more paint than a standard sheet of regular paper.

Watercolor paper is a heavier, smoother paper, which can take the heavy washes of color from watercolors.

What kind of paper can I use watercolors on?

Now, that I’ve established that regular paper isn’t the best to use for watercolors, you might be wondering, what kind of paper can I use watercolors on?

You can use any kind of paper for watercolor, but be aware that some types of paper will not take well to the application of wet watercolor. Some papers are made from wood pulp, which is very absorbent.

This is especially true for student grades and rough-surfaced papers. You may find that your colors bleed or spread out onto the page.

Choosing the right paper is an important step in the process. Knowing what the different types of paper are made from will help you make an informed decision about which one suits your needs best.

The most common types of watercolor paper are cold press and hot press. Cold press is rougher than hot press and has a rougher surface texture.

Hot press is smoother than the cold press, with a smoother surface texture. The texture of the paper affects how it handles paint; some papers hold more than others and require less water in order to keep them from buckling when wetted out with paint.

There are also different weights of paper available, ranging from 90lb all the way up to 300lb!

The weight refers to how thick the paper is; heavier papers tend to hold more paint but may buckle more easily if they get too wet while painting on them (especially if they’re not primed first).

What is the difference between watercolor paper and regular paper?

I’ve touched upon the topic of types of paper. And what is the difference between watercolor paper and regular paper?

Watercolor paper is a special type of paper that’s made to hold water and pigment. Watercolor paper comes in a variety of weights, surfaces, and sizes, and can be purchased at art supply stores or online.

A regular paper can also be used with watercolors, but it’s not as absorbent as watercolor paper.

Watercolor paper has two basic characteristics that make it different from regular paper: its weight and its surface texture.

Watercolor papers are available in many different weights, ranging from light to heavy.

The heavier the weight, the more durable it is when wet; but the heavier weights also tend to buckle more easily than lighter ones when wet.

Waterpainters often use lightweight papers for sketching out a composition before transferring their ideas onto heavier-weighted paper for final painting.

The surface texture of watercolor papers varies depending on what type of pulp was used to make them.

Some types have an even tooth, while others have an uneven one. Uneven-tooth textures can create interesting visual effects when used with certain techniques.

Can I use a sketchbook for watercolor?

I’ve been asked this question many times. Sketchbooks are a great way to do quick drawings, practice your drawing skills, and get ideas down on paper. But can I have a sketchbook for watercolor?

Yes!

When using a sketchbook with watercolor, it’s important to choose the right paper.

If you want to paint large areas of color, then choose a good quality paper that will allow your paints to flow easily across the surface.

For example, if you wanted to paint an ocean scene then you might want to try using Arches Watercolor Paper (140lb).

What can I use instead of watercolor paper?

Watercolor paper is a necessity for watercolorists, but it’s not cheap. Fortunately, there are alternatives that can be just as effective.

I however advise you to first use watercolor paper, as the alternatives require a bit more skill.

What can I use instead of watercolor paper?

1. Watercolor Canvas

While canvas is mostly used for oil and acrylic paintings, watercolor canvas exists. There is also a normal canvas, that has been primed with layers of watercolor gesso.

The watercolor canvas isn’t as absorbent as watercolor paper, so it can be difficult to add layered washes.

But as it’s not as absorbent, you could also wash off the watercolors quite easily in case you make mistakes.

2. Parchment paper

Another alternative is parchment. This is a textured surface that is created from animal skin, although also plant-based versions exist.

The colors will however look a bit more muted on parchment, as it has a warm tone to it naturally.

3. Fabric

You might even use watercolors on light fabric – cotton gauze or even silk. It will be more difficult to control the bleeding of colors, but this all depends on the texture of the fabric you’re using.

In any case, some creative artwork can come out of it and I’m sure you’ll be happy with the result!

Can you use watercolor pencils on regular paper?

Whatever I said in the article before, of course, involved the “normal” watercolors, meaning watercolor pans or paints. But can you use watercolor pencils on regular paper?

Watercolor pencils are a great way to learn about watercolor painting, and they’re also useful for doing small pieces.

The answer is yes — sort of. Watercolor pencils can be used on any type of paper and even other surfaces like wood or canvas, but there are some things you’ll need to consider before doing so.

If you use too much water with the pencil, the regular paper will not be strong enough to absorb it and your painting will ruin.

I recommend watercolor paper over regular paper for the same reasons as stated for watercolor paints. And I really want you to avoid watercolor bleeding on your paintings!

Final thoughts

So, can you use watercolor on regular paper? The takeaway is that it will be a lot harder to use watercolor on regular paper than on watercolor paper.

The reason is that watercolor paper is made especially for use with watercolors and has a coating on one side that makes it more absorbent than most other kinds of paper.

I’ve always been curious about the toxicity of watercolor paint. I love to paint but was always worried about whether or not the chemicals in my paints could harm my skin. If you’re painting with them regularly, you might be wondering the same thing. Is watercolor paint toxic to the skin?

Watercolor paints contain some mildly toxic ingredients, however, there isn’t enough of them in the watercolor paints to harm us or our skin. There are certain pigments in watercolors that could be more problematic than others, so I advise you to check the toxicity rating of the pigments you’re using.

I hope this answer gave you an idea about the question “is watercolor paint toxic to skin”. But do keep reading if you want to learn more about this topic. I discuss the toxicity levels of pigments if watercolor paints contain lead and more.

Are watercolors toxic?

Watercolors are a type of paint that is made from water and pigments. The pigments are usually natural minerals and plants.

Watercolors have been used for centuries to create beautiful works of art. But are watercolors toxic?

Some people think that watercolors are toxic, but this isn’t true. Watercolors are safe to use in your home or classroom because they are non-toxic and non-flammable.

This means they will not cause harm if they get on your skin or in your mouth, or if they catch on fire.

Some watercolors contain pigments made from heavy metals, such as cadmium. These pigments give watercolors their vibrant colors, but they can also be harmful when ingested.

Read the label of the watercolors for any harmful pigments.

Watercolors are toxic if you ingest them. But they’re safe for children to use in art projects, as long as the paint is applied to a surface and not eaten.

The amount of pigment that can be swallowed before it causes harm varies based on the age of the child and the type of pigment used in the paint.

For example, older children may be able to swallow small amounts of cadmium without suffering any adverse effects, while younger children would need to swallow larger amounts of lead or cadmium before experiencing symptoms.

For adults, if ingested, watercolors do not cause any effects on health.

Is watercolor paint toxic to the skin?

Watercolor paint is not toxic to the skin, but it may be labeled as an “irritant.” This is because the pigments in watercolor paint can cause irritation to your skin if you have sensitive skin.

Is watercolor paint toxic to the skin? It is possible that someone with an allergic reaction to certain pigments could experience itching or burning if they touch watercolor paint.

But most people do not experience any adverse reactions when they come in contact with watercolor paint.

The pigments used in watercolor paints are made from minerals or natural sources, such as plants or rocks.

Some pigments may contain traces of lead or cadmium, so it’s important to choose paints made with less toxic pigments when possible.

That being said, even artists who use oil paints don’t need to worry about exposing their skin to the oils themselves because they don’t actually absorb into the skin like other types of oils do.

Make sure you store your watercolors properly to avoid any chemical reactions of them. Watercolor paint should be stored in a dry environment away from direct sunlight and heat.

Does watercolor have lead?

Watercolor paints are made of binders and pigments. These bright pigments may contain some chemicals which help with lightfastness.

Some pigments are actually labeled as hazardous although watercolor paints do not have enough of these ingredients to be toxic.

These ingredients can include cadmium, zinc white, and cobalt. Does watercolor have lead?

Lead is a heavy metal and is toxic to humans. It can cause serious health problems if ingested.

The amount of lead in watercolor paint varies depending on the pigment used.

Lead white has been banned from many countries because it contains too much lead, but other pigments may contain small amounts of lead.

Is watercolor paint toxic to the skin if it contains heavy metals? The truth is that these paints have such a small amount of heavy metals that they’re not harmful to the skin.

Watercolor paints are generally non-toxic to the skin. The only exception is the rare few that contain lead and other heavy metals, but these are not common in the United States.

If you are concerned about the health effects of lead or other heavy metals in your paint, you can buy high-quality paints that contain little or no lead at all.

Some brands created non-toxic paints that are completely safe for anyone. These include Schmincke and Winson & Newton.

Final Thoughts

Watercolor paint, if ingested in large quantities, can be toxic to the body. However, watercolor paint is not considered a major health risk.

Watercolor paint is not toxic to the skin and honestly, I’ve never had any reaction. However, the pigments used in watercolor paints can cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.

Watercolor like an artist with Van Gogh products

The Van Gogh watercolors are student-grade paints produced in the Netherlands by Royal Talens.

Royal Talens is one of the largest manufacturers of artist-quality paints, pencils, and other art materials in Europe, and they also make products for other brands like Rembrandt.

Van Gogh Watercolors are developed with a careful balance between quality and price.

With brilliant and intense colors, high tinting strength, excellent lightfastness, and brilliant mixability, they are the perfect choice for artists of all levels, from beginners to professionals.

These watercolors are intended for ‘the serious artist,’ filling a niche for affordable quality paints that are less expensive than their Rembrandt Professional range but of a higher quality than student paints.

Van Gogh is available in sets of half pans and full pans as well as tubes.

The pigments in Van Gogh watercolors are listed on the back of the packaging, making it easy to identify the specific pigments in each pan or tube.

What can you expect from Van Gogh watercolors?

The Van Gogh watercolors give you the chance to create your own work of art. Whether it is a landscape, portrait, or still life, you will work with professional quality watercolors.

The unique ingredient in these Van Gogh watercolors is gum arabic. This makes the paint more flexible and keeps your colors from drying too quickly.

The Van Gogh watercolors are available as sets ranging from 6 to 24 colors (pans or tubes). For example, you have a set with 24 tubes, but also a set with 12 tubes and one with 6 tubes.

The review

These are very affordable when compared to other artist-grade watercolors.

They’re a great value for artists who want good quality paints without breaking the bank as the watercolors produce vibrant, transparent colors at a fraction of the cost of most watercolor paint.

Van Gogh’s watercolors contain specially selected pigments of high purity and quality for making paintings of lasting beauty.

These natural pigments are bound by means of modern synthetic resins, modified starches, and traditional gums such as gum arabic to achieve brilliant colors of perfect consistency.

They are made with modern manufacturing techniques that allow the colors to be purer and more concentrated than traditional watercolors. The paints dry quickly and have a high lightfastness.

The colors are vibrant, intense, and very well pigmented even when watered down.

Sometimes watercolors can be tricky to mix, but with Van Gogh watercolors, mixing is effortless and it expands the range of colors tremendously.

These high-quality student-grade paints are easy to use and blend well. The final product truly exceeded my expectations: the paints are vibrant and have a very good opacity.

Van Gogh Watercolor – Plastic Painting Box of 24 Paints

This Van Gogh watercolor set is ideal for beginner artists. It includes 24 basic colors in a compact plastic case.

The pans are removable so you can switch them up as you prefer or even use them in another palette if needed.

The case has a built-in mixing palette that is quite large and easy to clean as it detaches at the hinges.

The set also comes with a brush that is a great size for detail work. There is also a lot of space around the pans for bigger brushes, which prevents the contamination of colors.

I would definitely recommend this product to anyone interested in starting watercolor painting!

Pros and cons – Is this the set for you?

I’ve covered the main points of the Van Gogh watercolors review, but let’s now see what you should keep in mind when you are buying these watercolors.

What are the pros of these watercolor sets and what are the cons?

Reasons to buy

Bear in mind

Marked as student grade, but the quality goes towards artist grade
Comes with a mixing paletteIntense and well-pigmented colors
Great mixability
Removable pans

Comes only with one brush
The brush is only for detail work
The bigger sets are not travel-friendly
Colors need to be watered down quite a bit to achieve the transparent look

Van Gogh VS White Nights – Reviews of watercolor sets

When reviewing different brands of watercolors, the White Nights watercolors come close to the Van Gogh watercolors in regards to affordability.

So, which one should you choose, and what are the main selling points in the Van Gogh vs White Nights debate?

Both watercolor sets are marketed as student grade, but they are both high quality regardless.

Both brands use similar pigments, but they use different ones, and it is worth mentioning here that the White Nights watercolors have more filler in their watercolors.

The quality is pretty similar if we talk about the paint itself. White Nights is a little bit creamier than Van Gogh, but I personally prefer Van Gogh because it is easier to apply on paper.

I would say that the opacity of the paints is quite similar, but I would say that the opacity of Van Gogh is a little bit better than in White Nights.

The pigments are slightly different in each of them. In White Nights you will find PB29 (Ultramarine), instead of PB29:1 (Natural Ultramarine).

In Van Gogh, you will find PY42 (Yellow Ochre), instead of PY43 (Yellow Ochre Light).

They’re good, but not artist grade. They’re very opaque, but also very flat (no granulation). They are student-grade watercolors that seem to be somewhere in between student grade and artist grade. Definitely perfect for beginners.

How to use Van Gogh watercolors?

Where are Van Gogh watercolors made?

Van Gogh watercolors are made in Holland by a company called Royal Talens. Royal Talens was founded in 1899 near the Dutch city of Apeldoorn by three brothers who were members of the Talens family, which has a history of involvement in the art materials business dating back to the 1600s.

CONCLUSION

Despite these watercolors being in the student grade range, they are actually of a higher quality than other watercolor paints in the same quality range.

The colors are vibrant and opaque and you should have no issues blending them.

The Van Gogh watercolors are a good starting point for people who are new to watercolors and wish to experiment before investing in artist-grade paints.

I hope this Van Gogh watercolors review helped you in deciding whether these watercolors are a good fit for you. If you have any further questions about how these paints perform, please leave a comment below.

You may have heard about the Kuretake Gansai Tambi watercolors as they are a quite popular brand of Japanese watercolors. They are known to contain top student-grade paints, but one of the most frequently asked questions about this Gansai Tambi set is, are Kuretake watercolors lightfast?

The Gansai Tambi watercolor set is not very lightfast. While the box itself has no lightfastness rating, we had to test the paints to actually get this information. While these paints have amazing opaque colors and are suitable for beginners and hobbyists, we do not recommend them for professional artists as they fade over time.

This of course doesn’t apply to all the paints in the set, so keep reading if you want a more detailed answer to your question of are Kuretake watercolors lightfast. We also provide some insight into how these paints are made and some alternatives.

Kuretake Watercolors – What Are Gansai Tambi Watercolors?

The Gansai Tambi watercolors are Japanese paints from the brand Kuretake.

The Gansai in the name states the medium of the watercolors and Tambi is the specific name that the brand selects.

Gansai watercolors are different from Western paints, specifically when it comes to the pigment and binder ratio.

The ingredients of course vary through brands and that provides the quality of the paint.

These watercolor sets include pigment and the binder Gum Arabic, much like Western watercolor paints.

However, Gansai also contains animal hide glue, beeswax, sugar, sugar syrup, and glycerin.

While some Western brands also use some type of sugar component, the animal hide glue and other mixtures are the key difference.

Kuretake doesn’t use low-quality fillers and each component that goes into these paints has its purpose.

This is why Japanese watercolors offer creamy paints, that are super easy to work with.

Gansai colors also have a higher pigment-to-binder ratio than Western colors, which is why the paints are so opaque and vibrant.

Japanese Watercolor Paints

It is worth mentioning here that these traditional watercolors have been formulated for Japanese rice papers and were generally sold in large pans to suit larger brushes for Japanese paintings.

They were generally used for quick sketches and underpaintings by professionals, but because they are a cheaper option, they are considered student-grade watercolors.

The Japanese watercolor paints itself are reflecting the natural colors that occur in the Japanese landscape, so much of the color scheme is different from the Western paint boxes.

The sets come with 36 or 48 pans, which provides a wide range of colors without mixing. This also has a purpose, as it makes the on-the-spot painting much easier!

Are Kuretake Watercolors Lightfast? Testing Gansai Tambi Watercolor Set

As I stated before, Kuretake paints are a version of traditional Japanese paint.

The Gansai Tambi box is actually a vegan paint box, which means that it uses a vegan glue binder instead of an animal one.

This can lead to a slight build-up if you don’t use enough water with them or you use them too thickly. You can see some shiny spots when it happens, due to the glossier binder.

The box itself unfortunately does not come with any pigment information and therefore there is no information about the lightfastness rating of the paints.

We tested the Kuretake Gansai Tambi watercolors of 48 pans for one year of sun exposure to check the fading of all the colors.

Below is a table of the results, so you can have a better look, at which paints are actually lightfast (no fading on the sun over the year) and those which aren’t (extreme fading).

Extreme fading

Moderate fading

Minor fading

No fading

Rose M Deep (36)
Carmine (35)
Rose Madder (34)
Red (32)
Cad. Red (30)
Cad. Scarlet (31)
Cad. Orange (33)
Gold (90)
Cobalt Violet (38)
Purple (37)
Lilac (13)
Cherry Blossom (14)
Rose Beige (12)
Maroon (72)

Cad. Yellow (43)
Sap. Gr. Lt (51)
Hookers Gr. (52)
Forest Gr. (56)
Horizon Blue (69)
Prussian (66)
Indigo (67)
Natural Beige (11)
Indian Red (71)

Sap. Green (53)
Turquoise Gr. D. (57)
Bl. Gr. D. (68)
Raw Umb. D. (47)

Aureolin (43)
Lemon Yel. (40)
Greenish Y. (48)
Olive Green (54)
Lime Green (59)
Sap Green D. (58)
Viridian (55)
Malachite (51)
Ultra. Pale (61)
Turq. Blue (62)
Cerulean Bl. (63)
Cobalt Bl. (60)
Ultra Bl. (64)
Bluish Gold (91)
Imperial (38)
Yell. Ochr (44)
Burnt Sienna (46)
Black (20)
Gray (21)
White (10)
White Gold (906)

As you can see, the most fugitive paints (those with extreme fading) are shades of red, orange, pink, and purple.

What is unusual is the low lightfastness of the gold paint, which normally doesn’t change over time, but the Kuretake one actually darkened with sun exposure.

All in all, the set is not too bad, with 21 out of the 48 colors appearing to be lightfast and therefore could be used as reliable paints for professional artists.

Apparently, the Kuretake brand changed the ingredients a bit over time, as the sets have previously been more lightfast.

As the box does not indicate the pigment ingredients, it’s hard to tell when the company changes the manufacturing without testing.

Overall, I think these watercolors are best used for sketches and illustration projects. If you are planning on digitalizing your art and scanning it for reproduction, these will work fine.

If you’re a beginner, these are actually perfect, as they are a cheap option with vibrant and opaque colors, so perfect to practice your art techniques, study color theory, and use in your sketchbook.

The Gansai Tambi paints will also work well if you make cards or other craft projects, that are either disposable or will have no direct sun exposure.

Which Kuretake Watercolor Sets Are Lightfast?

The sets from the brand Kuretake do not include any pigment information, and the brand has actually been changing the ingredients quite a bit during the years, so there is no real information about which sets are in fact lightfast.

As of now, lightfastness is different in various colors. The best way to know is to actually test the watercolors yourself.

So to answer your question “Are Kuretake watercolors lightfast?” – no, not really. They are perfectly fine to use if you’re not planning on hanging your art in a sunlit room, but they are not made for artists.

Which Watercolor Sets Are Lightfast?

When we’re talking about art supplies, we need to mention that they generally fall into two categories – student-grade and artist-grade.

Student-grade and artist-grade watercolors are also differentiated by their lightfastness. The lightfastness of a pigment is its ability to withstand exposure to light without fading or discoloring.

Artist-grade watercolors are made for professional artists, and they often use higher-quality pigments that can withstand aging better than student-grade paints.

They also tend to be more expensive than student-grade paints because of their quality. This doesn’t necessarily mean that all student-grade paints are not lightfast.

Below are a few of my recommendations for cheaper options, which still hold well through time and the effects of the environment.

Lightfast student-grade watercolor sets:

Winsor & Newton Cotman Watercolor Sketchers Pocket Box

Daniel Smith Essentials Introductory Watercolors Sets

Van Gogh Watercolor Pocket Box Set

Kuretake Watercolors VS. Daniel Smith Essentials Introductory Watercolors

One mentioned paint box that is indeed lightfast is the Daniel Smith Essentials Introductory set. Why have I chosen this set next to the Kuretake one?

The two sets, despite one being Japanese and one Western, both have highly pigmented paints that produce amazing bright colors.

However, there is one major difference between the two, and that is how long the paintings with their colors last.

Within 2 years of testing the Daniel Smith watercolors, I have noticed almost no fading in all the paints, which puts this set way above the Kuretake one.

The downside is the number of paints, as you only get 6 colors, but these are great for mixing even if you’re a beginner. The quality really is top-notch and almost professional-grade.

If you can spend some extra bucks, I really do recommend you to try the Daniel Smith ones, as the art you will produce will last you much longer.

This again depends on your needs. If you are only starting and wish to practice, buy the cheaper option, which is the Kuretake watercolors.

If you are further along with your hobby and you want to display your art, the Daniel Smith box is the one for you.

Attributes

Kuretake Watercolors

Daniel Smith Watercolors

Quality

Student-grade

Student-grade

Intensity

Highly pigmented

Highly pigmented

Transparency

Opaque

Transparent

Lightfastness

No

Yes

Pans or tubes

Pans

Tubes

Conclusion

To sum up, are Kuretake watercolors lightfast? No.

While some colors hold up pretty well, the majority don’t, and with the manufacturer constantly changing the ingredients list it’s hard to tell without testing it.

However, these watercolors are perfect for sketching and practice runs, if you’re a beginner artist. As they are really cheap, you won’t worry about how much paint you use!

Have I answered your questions? If not, leave me a comment below and I will get back to you soon!

I have reviewed many watercolor sets for beginners by observing the quality, transparency, and value for money.

I believe the best watercolor set for beginners should have high-quality paint, that is easy to work with and are relatively inexpensive.

Winsor & Newton is a highly trusted brand when talking about watercolor supplies.

Despite being a student line, Cotman still delivers high-quality paint that is beginner-friendly, especially because of the much lower price.

The Winsor & Newton Cotman Watercolor Sketchers Pocket Box is definitely the most compact watercolor set for beginners, which makes it perfect for travel as you can fit it in your pocket.

As you open it, there is a lid that can be turned into a mixing palette and a small brush. You only need a jar for some water and paper and you’re good to go.

This set includes 12 half pans, which is in my opinion a perfect selection for beginners. The paint does have synthetic fillers (got to keep the price down!), but they are rich in color and offer great transparency for easy layering.

If you are a beginner who is looking forward to painting in nature and not only at home, then the Raphael Watercolor Travel Pan Set is a good option for you.

It comes in a circular tin with 10 half-pan watercolors, a mixing palette as a lid, and also includes a small brush.

My selection for the best travel watercolors set is student-grade, but the paint still provides a lot of pigment and they are easy to mix.

The best feature of this product is its portability, as it has everything you need to take it outside and paint wherever.

With the 12-compartment mixing tray, you will not get frustrated when trying different mixtures of colors.

This Van Gogh Watercolors Set from the brand Royal Talens is a student-grade watercolor set of 12 tubes. But don’t let this fool you, the paint feels professional!

The tubes are 10ml tubes, so you get more product than from half pans, and they come in a metal tin box with a mixing palette, a sponge, and a brush. This set is however a bit pricier than other sets.

What about the quality of the paint? The colors are vivid even after they’re dry and they easily blend together. Transparency is almost professional-grade quality.

Having said that, this set is perfect for beginners if you have a higher budget, but many professional artists use them in their palettes as well, due to the vibrant natural-looking colors.

Daniel Smith is another well-known brand and this specific Daniel Smith watercolor set is made to introduce you to the art of watercolors. It only includes 6 tubes of 5 ml, 3 warm and 3 cool colors.

Despite only including 6 tubes, each color is highly pigmented and produces amazing bright colors.

These are made for mixing, which is great if you are a beginner who is interested in color theory.

The quality of the paint really is top-notch and is similar to that of professional watercolor paint, which makes the mixing a dream and you are able to create a wide range of bright colors.

The level of lightfastness and transparency is amazing!

The downside is the price. After all, it is quite high, especially when you only get 6 colors without a brush or a mixing palette.

I also wanted to include a watercolor set that includes a bigger range of colors, which makes your journey as a beginner easier.

This Sennelier’s student set comes with 24 half pans in a travel case with a mixing palette and a quality brush and retails for a much higher price than other sets.

The colors are bright, but they are a bit paler than in the other reviewed sets. The watercolors are however high transparency and they make glazing easy!

The formula of this portable watercolor set is reinforced with glycerin, which allows a smooth application to the paper.

This feature is great for beginners because it is easier to produce mixtures and wash with them.

The Sennelier watercolor paint set is on the pricier side of student grade sets, but you do get more paint for your buck, so it is worth investing if you are only starting your watercolor journey.

Reasons to buy

Bear in mind

– Good color selection
– Includes a mixing palette and a quality brush
– High transparency
– Perfect for beginners

– The colors are not as bright as in other sets
– Pricey

How to choose the best watercolor set for you?

Let’s discuss what to look for in the best watercolor sets, so you can start painting like a professional. I divided this topic into some categories, so you can check back when you’re deep in the reviews.

The main categories are quality, color, permanence, and transparency. Among professionals, there is also the question of choosing pan palettes or tube palettes, but this specific topic is big enough for its own section below.

Watercolor quality

When talking about art supplies, you need to know that they come in two categories – student-grade and professional-grade.

The student-grade options are much cheaper, but while they are a perfectly fine choice for beginners, they may not reach the quality of the professional-grade watercolor sets.

If you have a bigger budget, I suggest the professional artist quality paint as it has more pigment, better quality additives, and less filler. This means that the paint will produce a more intense color with far less product.

However, there are some professional brands that also manufacture student-grade paint, which is still high quality, but much friendlier for a smaller budget.

Color

When I say color, I mean the range of colors that a watercolor set provides you with. The great part about this is mixing the watercolor paint, which means you will be able to extend your range of colors significantly.

Not ready to invest a lot of money in paint? Start with 5 to 10 colors and test them out by mixing them and truly using them over a period of time.

While single pigment colors tend to be more vibrant, some professional artists find mixing them works better for their craft. Getting fewer colors will still provide great color mixing potential.

Some pigments will be higher in price due to the different raw minerals used. On the other hand, the student quality paint pricing is standardized, as they substitute those pigments with synthetic fillers.

Permanence

The permanence or lightfastness of color is the paint’s durability on paper when exposed to light and humidity.

Some of the factors that are considered for this are accelerated tests for binder stability and pigment manufacturers’ testing.

Permanence depends on the quality of the pigment and the quantity of additives, which are normally used to cut down the cost.

The rate is usually stated on the label of the paint, but many brands have this information online.

Transparency

The magic of watercolors comes in the ability to create a washed-out effect. There are two types of paint in regards to this, opaque or transparent.

It will be stated on the pans if they are opaque. While you can thin out the opaque paint, the level of transparency will determine, if you can create layers with it.

Should You Use Watercolor Pans or Watercolor Tubes?

As I have mentioned, when you are looking for the perfect watercolor set for you, you can choose between pans and tubes.

While both can have advantages and disadvantages, I can assure you that there is no difference in quality. The main difference is the process of making them.

The watercolors in pans go through an additional stage of drying during manufacturing before they hit the pans, while the watercolor tubes skip this and are poured directly into tubes.

From the point of view of an artist, the difference is that you have to rehydrate the pans, but not the paint from tubes. It is for you to decide, which option you prefer or is the best for your needs.

Because the pans are in fact dry, you can easily pack them up without fear of making a mess. But because they need water to be activated, they require a bit of extra time to prepare them.

Tubes are on the other hand a bit easier to use, as they mix faster with water. Here, you need to be careful not to squeeze too much paint out and waste it, so they are more suitable for painting on a larger scale.

I would also like to add that you can actually refill watercolor pans with paint from tubes. Clean and dry the pan, pour the paint three times, drying the paint in between.

When choosing, it comes down to you and what you prefer, so maybe try both to understand what works better. As watercolor sets with half pans are cheaper, I recommend those for absolute beginners.

Watercolor cleaning tips – How to clean your paint set?

To extend the longevity of your watercolor paints, it is important that you keep it clean and well-maintained.

Thankfully, watercolor paint is easily cleaned with only water and soap, so it will not take you forever to clean.

If you own watercolor paint in tubes, you only need to make sure to screw the cap back on completely, so you don’t risk the paint drying out.

If, however, you own watercolor paint in pans, try to store them in an air-tight container, so they don’t dry out and crack.

Watercolor paint in cakes or tubes will last a long time and need little care.

For the best upkeep of your palette, rinse it under water after you are finished painting. The paint will otherwise dry and it will be harder to clean.

Use a sponge and some soap if there are some stubborn paint spots that won’t come off. Dry your palette and store it.

To clean the brushes, you only need to run them under the water until the water is clear. Dry the watercolor brushes properly, so they don’t accumulate mold in storage.

Smooth the bristles and store the brushes with the bristle end up.

Frequently asked questions

I remember having a lot of questions and doubts starting with watercolor paint. It can be overwhelming with so much information on the internet, so I decided to make it a bit easier for you.

Below I answered some of the frequently asked questions that I personally get from people who are starting to learn about this beautiful art.

What are top watercolor brands for beginners?

The selection of watercolor paint seems to be never-ending. From the cheap kid-friendly options to high-end paint that you find in an art supplies shop.

There are only a few brands that you can always trust to deliver quality watercolor paint, whether they are student-grade or professional watercolor paint.

Some of the top watercolor brands are Daniel Smith, Winsor & Newton, Royal Talens, Sennelier, Sakura Koi and Schmincke.

Can watercolor expire?

Watercolor paints do have a shelf life and the manufacturers usually put that on the product.

Some brands estimate that the paint in tubes will last you up to 5 years, while the paint in pan scan actually lasts you a lifetime.

The best part of watercolors is that you can bring your expired paint back to life by adding water to it.

Are watercolors toxic?

Generally speaking, watercolors are completely safe to use. However, some pigments may contain cobalt, cadmium, and zinc, which can be harmful.

Keep in mind that you would have to ingest large amounts of paint to experience its toxicity. Many manufacturers have also removed those pigments from their products.

Are watercolors washable?

As watercolors are activated by adding water, they can be washed out of most materials easily. There are also some washable watercolor sets on the market, but those are usually for kids use.

Can I watercolor on canvas?

Normal canvas is not absorbent enough for watercolor painting. While there are some specific canvases made for watercolors, it is recommended to stick with watercolor paper to get the best results from the paint.

Can I watercolor on regular paper?

Technically, you could watercolor on regular paper, but most papers are not suitable for watercolor painting, as they are too thin to properly absorb water and they crinkle up fast.

What you will be left with is a result that will not be satisfying aesthetically. You can test the paper you want to use by dampening it a bit and watching how the paper reacts.

Can you use tubes and pans simultaneously?

Yes, you can indeed use watercolor paint from tubes and pans simultaneously in the same painting. You can also mix colors from pans with those in tubes.

Final thoughts

In the article, I have presented my reviews of the top watercolors for beginners. When choosing the best set for your needs, you need to think about how you want to use it.

This ranges from how many colors you would like in your palette, whether you want to mix them to get more colors or you feel more comfortable having more pans or tubes to choose from.

It is also important to note that as someone who is just starting out there will be trial and error, but don’t be scared to try different techniques to figure out what you prefer in a watercolor set.

You have your watercolor paint and brushes ready to go. You’ve got a brand new pack of watercolor paper that you would love to paint on. How is it best used? Is there a right way to use watercolor paper? Since you have probably been wondering this since you opened your package of watercolor paper, let’s see what side of watercolor paper to use?

The correct answer is that it doesn’t matter or more so, it depends completely on you. But they both work equally well. There are absolutely no rules about it, but there are some things to keep in mind as you’re experimenting with your painting materials. In any case, there is no right or wrong side, it all depends on what kind of techniques you are using and what kind of finished product you would want.

Has this been helpful? In this article, I show you the pros and cons of both sides of watercolor paper. I will also give you tips on how to choose the correct side of watercolor paper, and which works best – watercolor block paper or watercolor pad paper.

There are two sides to watercolor paper. One side is called the “rough” side, and the other is called the “smooth” side. The label on your watercolor paper will tell you which one is which (it’s usually printed right on the box).

But which side of the watercolor paper should I use?

But they both work equally well. When I started out, I was told to always paint on the rough side because it would hold more moisture and give me more working time before it dried out

But now I see people using each side for a specific purpose. First of all, let’s look at what makes watercolor paper different from other papers.

Watercolor paper has a surface that absorbs paint well and holds a lot of moisture without buckling or warping when wet.

This makes it ideal for painting with watercolors because it allows the pigments to flow smoothly across its surface and spread evenly.

Because of this quality, watercolor papers have a high rag content — usually between 60–100%. Rag refers to cloth fibers that have been woven together into a fabric; they’re what give the watercolor paper its rough texture.

The higher the percentage of rags in a piece of paper, the more textured and absorbent it will be.

Using the rough side

Watercolor paper comes in two surfaces: rough and smooth. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, but if you’re just starting out with watercolor, I recommend using rougher paper.

Why? Because it will help you learn to paint wet-into-wet. Wetting your paper only on one side will let you see how your colors blend together as they dry.

This can be a good way to learn about how different colors interact with each other before committing to painting over them completely with a second color or glaze of paint.

The rough side of the watercolor paper has more teeth (texture). This means that it will accept paint better, and you’ll be able to brush it off more easily.

It also means that when you use a wet brush on the surface of the paper, it will create more texture and interest.

If you’re looking for smooth, flat colors, then you don’t want to use the rough side of watercolor paper. You’ll get blotchy results.

Using the smooth side

Watercolor paper comes in a variety of textures and weights. Which you choose depends on the specific painting you plan to create.

The smooth side of watercolor paper is made for textural paintings with lots of detail. It’s also great for detailed drawings and illustrations because it allows for crisp lines and tiny details without any bleeding or smudging.

The smooth side of watercolor paper allows for more pigment to be transferred onto your surface because it’s less absorbent.

This means that when you paint on top of it, you’ll get a darker color and more saturation (intensity).

The rough side of watercolor paper is more absorbent than the smooth side, which means that it will take longer for the watercolor pigment to go through it. This results in lighter colors and less saturation.

If you’re not sure which side of watercolor paper is right for your project, it’s best to experiment with both options to see which one better suits your needs!

Does the watercolor paper have a right and wrong side?

What side of watercolor paper to use? Does the watercolor paper have a right and wrong side?

The watercolor paper does not have a right or wrong side. Both parts are right to use!

The only difference between the two sides is that one side may be more absorbent than the other, depending on how it was manufactured.

But there is no difference in the quality of the paper whatsoever – both sides are equally good for watercolor painting.

Ok, so some are smooth and some are textured; some absorb more than others; some are heavy and others are light. But what is the best way to determine which surface will work best for you?

To use it and try it for yourself, of course!

You can test the paper by placing a small amount of water on it (use distilled or purified water) and then see if any color washes off or if any fibers were damaged when you rubbed it with your fingers.

If you notice any damage, it’s likely that your painting will also be damaged quickly.

Can you use both sides of the watercolor paper?

So, I have discussed that you can use each side, depending on what type of technique you would like to use. So, can you use both sides of the watercolor paper?

Yes!

Watercolor paper is not like regular paper. Watercolor paper is made up of a heavier, smoother surface that allows for a bolder stroke and more intense color.

It also absorbs the paint better than regular paper, which makes it easier to blend colors.

Watercolor paper comes in two sides — one side has a smooth side and one side has a rough or textured side. The smooth side is great for detail work and the textured side is good for painting larger areas.

You can use both sides of watercolor paper because it doesn’t matter what surface you choose; however, there are some advantages to using each surface differently.

The smooth side is used for fine details and detailed work because it helps the paint flow evenly across the page and provides more control over your strokes.

The rough side is designed for larger areas so you can get more coverage with less paint.

Which side of Arches watercolor paper to use?

Arches watercolor paper is one of the most popular brands of watercolor paper. It’s soft, yet durable enough to withstand multiple layers of watercolor washes and other techniques.

There are two sides to Arches watercolor paper: the rough side (or “tooth”) and the smooth side (or “smooth”).

The rough side which has a rougher surface and therefore absorbs more water when you paint on it. The smooth side has a smoother surface and therefore absorbs less water when you paint on it.

Which side of Arches watercolor paper to use? You can use either side for your painting – it’s just a matter of personal preference!

While it is known that the “correct” side of the watercolor paper is the side with the watermark, it doesn’t mean that you cannot paint on the other side.

Generally, it depends on what type of painting you’re doing.

Which side of Fabriano watercolor paper to use?

Fabriano watercolor paper is a good choice for beginners, as it is very affordable and easy to use.

This type of watercolor paper is made in Italy using 100% cotton fiber and has a surface texture similar to Arches rough paper or Canson Montval rough paper.

It’s available in hot press (HP), cold press (CP), rough (R), and smooth (S) finishes.

The CP version has a slightly textured surface that helps prevent paint from sinking into the fibers.

Which side of Fabriano watercolor paper to use?

In general, the smooth side is best for pen & ink or other dry media, and the rough side works well with wet media.

However, this isn’t a hard-and-fast rule, so you may need to experiment a bit to find out what works best for you.

Final thoughts

Ultimately, what side of watercolor paper to use will likely boil down to personal preference.

Each side has its own set of positives and negatives, but ultimately it will come down to how you like to work in order for you to decide which side is best for you.

Experiment with different styles and types of paper, and see what results you get.

Watercolors are an artist’s and children’s favorite. Watercolors come in a variety of colors and once the paint is dry, it can simply be washed away with water. But what do you do with the waste water and how do you dispose of it? Can you put watercolor paint down the drain?

Most watercolor paints can go down the drain. The important part is those that can go down the drain don’t contain toxic ingredients, such as Cadmium or Cobalt. You can simply check the packaging of your watercolors or check with the manufacturer if it’s not stated on the box. If your paints do in fact contain some toxic heavy metals, it is better to dispose of them at a local waste facility.

Has this cleared up your confusion? Continue reading the article for a more in-depth explanation on the topic of whether can you put watercolor paint down the drain and if there are other options for disposal. I talk more about cleaning up after watercoloring, what can you do with watercolor water, and more!

How do you clean up after watercolor?

To answer your question of “can you put watercolor paint down the drain”, we need to first see how you clean up after watercolor.

Watercolor is a very fun medium to work in, but it can be a bit messy. So, how do you clean up after watercolor?

The main thing to remember when cleaning up after watercolor is that you don’t want to use soap. Soap can leave residue on your brushes and also your palette, if not rinsed off properly.

So, what should you use? Water!

Yes, plain old water will clean up your palette and brushes nicely. The best method I’ve found for cleaning my brushes is to rinse them in a cup of water and then squeeze out any excess water with my hand – I usually wear rubber gloves for this step.

I then let them air dry overnight before using them again. Brushes can be delicate so do not force the drying process!

As far as cleaning your palette goes, just rinse out your palette with running tap water, rub dry with a paper towel, or let dry overnight completely before putting the next color on.

How to dispose of watercolor paint water? Down the drain?

One way to make the disposal of watercolor paint water easier is to use only a small amount of rinse water when painting. When you use less water while painting, you will have less to dispose of when you are finished.

Ok, let’s now see how to dispose of watercolor paint water. While it’s not the worst idea to pour it down the drain, there is a safer way to do it instead of just washing everything in the sink.

The best way to dispose of watercolor paint water is to transfer it into a bigger container and let it sit for several days so that all of the pigment can settle out of suspension.

The water will be clear at this point but will smell like paint. You can then pour this down the drain, and flush it with hot water after doing so.

When you have emptied all of the water from the container, you will be left with just the paint pigment at the bottom. You can simply wipe this away with a paper towel and throw it away.

This process makes sure the pigment doesn’t go down the drain and it is much safer for the environment and your plumbing.

And don’t remember to check the packaging in case your watercolors have metals like Cadmium in them! You should dispose of that watercolor paint water at your local waste facility!

Is It Okay to Wash Paint Brushes in the Sink?

And it’s a question that can be answered with a resounding “Yes!” In fact, I think washing your watercolor brushes in the kitchen sink is one of the easiest ways to keep them clean and ready for use.

Watercolor brushes are different from other types of art brushes because they’re made of natural hair or synthetic fibers.

I recommend that you do not use soap on your brushes, but just plain water instead. Soap will strip away some of the natural oils from your brush bristles and cause them to become stiffer over time.

The one thing that I do is make sure that I rinse the water out of them thoroughly and then allow them to dry in an open area. This will keep them from getting mildewed or damaged by moisture.

What to do with watercolor paints water?

Watercolor paints are made of pigments, binders, and water. The pigment is the color, the binder holds all of the paint together and the water helps to thin out the paint.

When you are finished painting with your watercolors, you will have some leftover paint water in your palette which can be discarded or saved for later use.

I’ve tried to come up with ways to reuse the leftover water from my painting sessions, but nothing ever worked very well. The water was too thick and didn’t rinse very well from whatever container I used.

That led me to think about ways that I could use this wasted resource in other ways!

You can always dilute the waste water with more water and use it again or pour it into your garden or plants as a fertilizer. Want to know about this?

Can you water plants with paint water?

As I said, I use waste watercolor paint water instead of plain water for my garden. Can you water plants with paint water?

Well, I do it and my house plants are thriving! I heard many people do this and I thought I’d give it a try. It turns out that plants like the minerals that watercolor paint has.

And if the plant gets something that isn’t a nutrient for it, it will simply filter it out and not use it.

You might however notice some changes in the color of the plant if you are watering them with watercolor water that isn’t diluted. Unless you’d like that effect?

Anyway, I’m not really a biologist, but I know that house plants definitely require more help with their soil than those in nature which get many more minerals and nutrients.

The soil of your house plants? Limited amount!

You could of course keep changing the soil or keep adding the minerals, but it seems that adding watercolor paint water actually works.

A simple solution that will also be beneficial for your drain and plumbing.

All at your own risk, of course.

Is watercolor paint water toxic?

With watercolors being so popular among kids and adults, people are always wondering “is watercolor paint water toxic?” The short answer is no.

Watercolor is not toxic for humans, but some of the pigments used to make the paint might be.

Watercolor has been used for over 2000 years and is considered one of the safest art mediums available today.

Watercolor is made of pigments suspended in water and gum arabic. Gum arabic is a natural sugar ingredient that gives the paint its consistency and acts as a binder to hold the pigment particles together.

The most common toxic chemicals found in watercolors are heavy metals such as Cadmium, Chromium, and Lead.

Cadmium itself is a heavy metal and is toxic but cadmium pigments are not classified as dangerous for use. The level of soluble cadmium in the pigments is very low it poses no greater risk after swallowing or breathing in than other pigment types.

Final thoughts

So, can you put watercolor paint down the drain? In the end, watercolor paint isn’t like typical oil and acrylic paints.

It’s water-soluble, so you can put the waste water down the drain. With that said, however, I’d strongly advise separating the pigments from the water, if you decide to do it.

Better yet, use the waste water to water your plants!
