This course, for teens and adults, introduces color and composition as they pertain to abstract work. Students explore formal elements such as shape, value, color, mark making and surface with paint and collage materials. Through their work with abstract concepts students investigate the 2-dimensional picture plane and compositional structures.
Students will learn the fundamentals of painting while using the abstract language and will be working from observation and non-objectively.
This course will be broken up into three units surveying three major forms of abstraction: objective, non-objective gestural, and hard edge. At the end of the course students will be able to solve introductory painting problems such as color mixing, creation of space and form. They will also learn how composition and design are relevant to painting while using the abstract language.
