You can easily learn the basics while using acrylic paints! Bring your laptops to paint from your own uploaded photographs or images captured off the Internet. Of course, printed images are suitable for use as source material too. Students will explore traditional blocking-in methods while developing subject matter using expressive color, contrast and brushwork. After observing demonstrations, students will start off creating studies to learn basic techniques in color mixing and applications for building volume and space. The instructor will offer critiques that assist in constructive problem solving while exercising our vocabulary for the painting process. Supplies are provided by the student and a list will be sent one week prior to the start of class. Level: Beginner thru Intermediate.

This class is also offered Tuesdays, 6:30 - 9 pm.

This online Zoom class, recommended for ages 13 - adult, is geared for people who have never knitted before and will learn the very basics like the knit and purl stitch, garter vs stockinette stitch, increasing and decreasing, changing color and casting on and binding off. Students will come out of the class with a striped scarf and a ribbed hat, as well as how to read patterns and seam up their knitting. In addition, we will have discussions about online resources and fiber communities like ravelry.com. They will also get an overview of different kinds of yarn (different weight, different fiber content) and different kinds of needles (straight vs circular, bamboo vs metal, etc). Two hours a week for six weeks offers enough time to cover content and to allow plenty of practice and assistance. For people who catch on quickly, knitting in the round, lace, color-work and cable techniques can also be explored.

A ZOOM account is required to attend class virtually.

Product? That’s for the birds. Students are led through a series of tactile and writing exercises to unleash creative juices without the pressure to end with a final product. We will be working with household objects, doing MadLibs (remember those?!), examining nonsense writing to mine it for creative gems and holding story circles all in service of generating ideas and concepts for eventual art pieces. Creatives taking this class will be able to inspire each other, laugh and provoke thought in one another, all facilitated by a seasoned creator and performer, Katie Butler. Ages 13 - adult.

Students will emerge with easy, fun generative tools for when the next creative block hits. Great for emerging artists in all mediums, and seasoned artists looking to tap into their mojo. Spend an hour exploring concept-creation and art-making in a low-pressure, fun environment!

Katie is a theatre maker and seasoned teaching artist with an MFA in Devised and Physical Performance from the Pig Iron School and almost 20 years experience as an actor, director and creator.

This is an Online Class offered via Zoom. A Zoom account is required to attend.

This class is also offered Friday, April 30, 1-2 pm and Saturday, May 8, 11 am-12 pm.

This class will be held outdoors on the grounds of the beautiful Patterson Farm. We will go over paring down your supplies, site selection, composition, values and color for painting the landscape outdoors. The key to plein air painting is to simplify! We will focus on seeing the landscape in terms of shapes rather than details in order to capture the scene in a limited window. Social distancing measures will be in place, and masks required when we meet at the start and end of class.

There will be 2 make up days, June 9 & 16, only if a class is cancelled due to inclement weather.

This studio style class will offer individual guidance and instruction as students work from photographs, iPads or a Still Life setup using their own mediums and tools (oils, acrylics, pastels... brushes, palette knives, charcoal...). Various aspects of painting and color theory are covered and discussed depending on one’s level or needs. It is an opportunity to develop your skills or pick up where you left off years ago. In a setting like this students learn from each other while being continuously inspired! Before class ends everyone participates in a critique of the works that were done that day. This is for students with intermediate painting skills through Advanced.
